Rickey Henderson's induction into the Hall + talk of an economic depression + the annoying cliche of the moment, "You know, with this economy and all..." =
Oh, Leon, how we miss you.
Perception is reality, the saying goes. Modern players can never transcend time, athletes only care about the money and the fan is never wrong. Yet, all you need to do is dig a little deeper to find the truth. As a freelance sportswriter, my job is to give the audience a story around what just happened. As a consumer, I expect that sports will always provide more than I bargained for. As a fan, my hopes are to be enlightened by more than points. Welcome to the mind of a sports scribe.

Unbelievable

Look, next Tuesday, the world will witness the most anticipated speech in recent history shortly after President-elect Barack Obama (wow, actually typing that is something) takes the Oath of Office. However, if you want a truly magnificent oratory, just wait six months.
Six months?
Yes. Six months from now, you will hear the greatest oration in human history and PREhistory.

I'm dead serious.
While it will be a joy to hear from a seemingly vindicated Jim Rice, it will be one Rickey Henderson who not only steals the show, but convinces the folks in Cooperstown to rename the Hall itself on the spot.
Meanwhile, check the new poll.

Celebration!
For those of you that celebrate Christmas, my present to you.
For those who do not, celebrate this man's birthday instead.
Rickey (Henderson) ... on sharing his birthday with Christmas
"I used to get cheated. Now the rule is they got to bring me two presents. I don't care if it's the smallest thing in the world, you gotta get me two. My kids say, 'We don't know what to get you!' They say I already got everything. Naw, I don't care if you go out and get me bubble gum. But you gotta get me two bubble gums, you can't get just one. I been cheated too long!"
Merry Christmas or Kwanzaa, Happy Holidays, Happy Eating Someone Else's Food and Happy Time Off!
