Not surprisingly, your Scribe has been selected as a juror. Without elaborating on the specifics, it'll be a little difficult to catch up with the happenings in the sports world for at least the next week. Add another trek to the alma mater and it'll be an unexpectedly slow week here on the blog. There will be posts for sure as with the courtroom hours, it'll be great to get home at least an hour earlier and finish some drafts. Yet, if it appears that I'm behind, spend six hours of your day listening and posing internal and outward debates on a crime.
Please pardon the potential fatigue.
However, two quick points.
For starters, when you have only played one game of basketball in almost five years, you tend to have a greater appreciation for those who do so for a living; not necessarily because of the attention and possible financial windfall for the very best, but for the sheer conditioning and athleticism that these women and men must maintain day in and day out. Whether it's practice or real-live action, it's such a marvel to know that what is mere recreation and seemingly easy to us is a daily challenge for this small circle of elite players.
Yes, even the NCAA-level players I recently tried to knock down a few notches based on the obsession of March Madness.
Secondly, there's a new poll on your right. If you have not voted, please do so and spread the word. This question may be more timely based on the current NBA race, however, it applies to all sports and all levels.
Perception is reality, the saying goes. Modern players can never transcend time, athletes only care about the money and the fan is never wrong. Yet, all you need to do is dig a little deeper to find the truth. As a freelance sportswriter, my job is to give the audience a story around what just happened. As a consumer, I expect that sports will always provide more than I bargained for. As a fan, my hopes are to be enlightened by more than points. Welcome to the mind of a sports scribe.
