I

When I was the Giants reporter for WHCR's "What's Going On", I had the pleasure of not being back on the air again, but appearing as an in-person guest with John Isaacs.

Isaacs, for those of us who don't have the depths of basketball history as we'd like, was a member of of the Harlem Renaissance, the first team to win a professional world basketball championship in a Depression-era sports world.

Mr. I, as people had called him through the years, passed away at the age of 93, but was still heavily involved with the game of basketball to his last days.

Because I had a short stint (just the 2007 season for the Giants), I did not have the opportunities to learn much about his days as a player or mentor to many of the City's talents that came in his direction for over five decades. The news, however, rattled me a bit.

I thought I had some handle on basketball history until Mr. I essentially schooled me a few times off the air. However, he was one of those guys who gave the respect he received, regardless of generational views.

Mr. I, from afar, was more than a former athlete, but someone whose heart truly belonged to the game and to the City.

Thank you, Mr. I.

Vocal

As you are preparing for another weekend of summer festivities (BBQing, loving the significant other, getting smacked around by the kids, drinking high-proof liquor until Monday morning, what-have-you), you should try to be near a radio or at least the internet Sunday afternoon.

After being unexpectedly bumped last week, the official return as Giants beat reporter for WHCR's 'What's Going On' takes place Sunday afternoon at 3PM eastern. It'll be a re-introduction of not only the defending Super Bowl champs, but of some kid trying to be 'a real media guy'. So put that in your Outlook/Crackberry/iTouch.

Please?

If you're in the NYC vicinity, tun to 90.3 FM. If not, just hit the live link on the website. Call-in numbers are on the site as well.

Well...

Considering that the Olympics are to begin later this week, my on-air call was bumped and I'll be appearing next week as originally planned. The show, if you heard, had a heavy focus on the Beijing festivities as we inch closer to the Opening Ceremonies on August 8th.

As much as I was looking forward to a few minutes to reintroduce myself to the 'What's Going On' audience, I just have to be even more prepared next Sunday.

After all, people want to talk football as the month of August progresses.

My apologies to the two of you who were trying to catch me on the radio today.

Early

Well, it turns out that I'll be back to Giants reporting a week earlier than originally planned.

Now that is a good thing.

If you're in the NYC area, tune in at 3PM today to 90.3 FM - WHCR (City College) for 'What's Going On'. If you're on the internets, check out whcr.org to listen in live.

My hopes are that we will still have the football roundtable next week, but today will be a quick few minutes about the Super Bowl champs. Since their first preseason action takes place later this week against Detroit, it's a good start for everyone to get reacquainted with Big Blue while the Yankees and Mets (well, their owners and fans) continue to battle for the headlines.

Update

August sort of sneaks up on you, doesn't it?

People take vacations in exotic locales. Young interns get even more plastered at the bars they snuck into before returning to college. Block parties keep the cops on their toes because you know someone's going to act a fool and start a fight. Last, but not least, family reunions involve someone's uncle screaming "that's my jam" every time the DJ spins into another song.

Yep. August is near.

So after six months of straying from a ton of pigskin chatter, I'll be returning to the WHCR airwaves as the beat reporter of the (still somewhat of a shock to say so) Super Bowl Champion New York Giants. August 10th will be a training camp/preseason roundtable about the Giants, Jets and likely college football. As more info becomes available, I'll let you know.

Also, Apprentice is featured in Sports NY Style. Expect much more from me in that space as the days progress.

Oh, don't worry. Scribe ain't going nowhere, my friends.

Reminder

I'll be on the air as usual for WHCR today.

An in-depth talk about the Giants' push for Super Bowl XLII. Next stop, Green Bay.

What's Going On begins at 3PM where Stephanie Stepp is live from Foxborough to talk about the AFC Championship Game and I will discuss the NFC tilt.

Upcoming

It has been a rather exhausting week professionally and personally, so Scribe hasn't benefited as it should. With that said, not only will there be new posts this weekend, but for the first time in weeks, I'll have some extensive airtime on What's Going On. While both of us will be in the Boston area, host Stephanie Stepp and I will be discussing the conference championship games on Sunday. While most of my discussion will deal with the NFC tilt, expect a dose regarding the AFC title game as well.

In addition, some of my posts will (hopefully) be featured on BlogCritics.org, a vast and diverse collection of blogs delving into any topic your heart desires.

Please feel free to spread the word and make sure to listen on Sunday at 3PM (Eastern) on WHCR 90.3 FM (in the immediate NYC area), myspace.com/whcr or whcr.org.

Speakers

Make sure they work later today (Sunday December 16th) as it will be an interesting show on WHCR this week. In addition to my usual New York Giants report on 'What's Going On' with Stephanie Stepp, Marvin Miller will be a call-in guest. If you don't know why that is one of the most important names in the history of sports, learn about him.

Also, tomorrow will be a return of sorts for where it all began. The reunion of a championship tag-team, you might say.

Walkie-Talkie

Well, not exactly walking, unless you consider walking around the apartment with slippers on with a cellphone in your hand.

For those who listen to my New York Giants reports on WCHR's 'What's Going On', I spend a little more time on the show from time to time, depending on the topic. Today, we will continue the at-large discussion on the Sean Taylor case. Tune in today at 3:00PM on 90.3 FM or online at either whcr.org or myspace.com/whcr.

Say What?!?!: There are a few articles that I feel are worth the read in regards to this tragedy. If you have not read them, take the time to do so. From ESPN, Wayne Drehs finds some reactions from several NFL players who feel that pro athletes have huge bullseyes on their backs. Also Len Pasquerelli of the Worldwide Leader has one of the few articles that boldly deal with the reality of the situation for the Washington Redskins. Finally, another personal favorite, Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports wants folks to really think of the kind of year this as been for the NFL. However, do try to enjoy these games, if only for a moment.

Return

It looks as if starting today, I am making a return to my roots... sort of.

I will be a guest on What's Going On/Harlem USA today at 3:25 PM on WHCR 90.3FM NY (http://www.whcr.org/). Check it out and in advance, forgive me for any apparent nervousness. It's only been three years since I've been near a microphone.
